Sowinski Sullivan was the architect on a team for the planning and design of the new Rochester Intermodal Transportation Center. The team worked with the NYSDOT to evaluate requirements by Amtrak, CSXT, and Adirondack Trailways requirements to develop a plan for replacing the existing intercity bus and Amtrak services that sat on adjacent sites. The facility consists of a new station building, retail space, a below grade passenger concourse, platforms, baggage, and freight facilities, expanded parking capacity, a community bike share, and public open space with opportunities for public art installations. The track and platforms were upgraded to improve both passenger and freight operations at the station.

With input from the City of Rochester and Amtrak, Sowinski Sullivan developed a building design that recalls the character of the 1914 Union Station that formerly stood on the site while also addressing the needs and scale of the current project. The site design ensures that passengers will enjoy safe transfer between regional and intercity bus lines, Amtrak train service, shuttles, and taxis. Sowinski Sullivan also evaluated and recommended effective sustainability strategies to incorporate into the design with a focus on New York State Executive Order 88 for Energy Efficiency of State Buildings, the NYSDOT Green Leadership in Transportation Environmental Sustainability (GreenLITES) program, and the International Green Construction Code (IgCC).
