Sowinski Sullivan was the architect on a team for the planning and design of the new Buffalo Exchange Street Station. Sowinski Sullivan is working with a multi-disciplinary team, NYSDOT and Amtrak to develop a plan and phasing for the replacement of the existing Amtrak facility that currently sits on the site. The new facility will consist of a new station building, retail space, platform, bike storage, public open space, expanded parking capacity, and space for possible future expansion and intercity bus service.

The team developed a design that will address the needs and scale of the current project while also fitting into the character of the surrounding architecture in the city of Buffalo. The site design will provide a safe and enhanced connection to other modes of transportation, including the existing intercity light rail system. Feasible sustainable strategies are also being evaluated, as the project aims to meet current International Green Construction Code (IGCC) requirements.
