Sowinski Sullivan is leading architectural and mechanical engineer design for the new SEPTA Wissahickon Transportation Center. The existing transportation center is a high-traffic transfer facility in SEPTA’s urban bus network. The new facility will be located at the intersection of Ridge Avenue and Main Street. It is bordered by the Schuylkill River to the south and the Wissahickon Creek to the east. The center will accommodate 10 different routes connecting Center City to Manayunk, King of Prussia, City Line Ave and the Main Line. The bus loop will consist of seven sawtooth berths with 8 recovery/lay over spots situated around a covered, center island. The center island will house SEPTA welfare facilities, which consist of a supervisor office, a break room, and toilet rooms. A second island located on Ridge Avenue will include a public facility with commercial space, public toilet rooms, storage, and maintenance spaces as well as an evening-hours passenger waiting area. The canopy will feature a green roof, and the center island will serve as a bio-retention basin with raised pedestrian paths crossing through the island.
