Sowinski Sullivan is the architect on a team of consultants that are designing the ADA improvements for Jenkintown Station. The improvements to the station includes construction of new covered inbound and outbound high level platforms, the construction of a new elevator and stair tower off of each new platform providing an accessible route over the existing tracks via a new pedestrian bridge, and miscellaneous modifications to the existing surface parking to accommodate the new construction. The scope of work for the project was developed from the work required to provide ADA accessibility for the station. In addition to the high-level platforms and accessible pedestrian overpass, new toilet rooms and pedestrian shelters are to be provided off the platforms. The design of the overpass structure and new canopies are designed to complement and harmonize with the existing station architecture. The new canopies will feature new flat roofed bracketed steel columns to match the existing canopy design and the new overpass structure will be comprised of predominantly traditional finish materials (fieldstone veneer, standing seam metal roofs) and a restrained use of modern finish materials (precast concrete components, ground face concrete block).
