The vault will be approximately 6,600 sf and will house electrical equipment to provides power to the runways and taxiways at within the Airfield Operations Area (AOA). In addition, the new vault will reduce dependency on the existing field lighting vaults and provide for continued power in the event of failure at the existing vaults. The new vault will also provide added capacity to allow for future runway expansions and additions. Due to the Airport’s location adjacent to the Delaware River, various flood resiliency strategies will be implemented in the design. In addition, the area of the building is large enough that the City of Philadelphia’s sustainability requirements need to be incorporated into the design. SSA will lead the architectural design of the Light Vault.
