Sowinski Sullivan was the prime consultant and architech on a team of consultants for the Newark Liberty International Airport Terminal B-B1 connector improvements. The connector serves as a pedestrian passage that links secure boarding and arrival gates to retail spaces, exits, and baggage claim. The existing ceiling was damaged, leaving exposed lighting and mechanical systems. The connector's emergency lights were insufficient, and fire protection elements were outdated and inoperable. Sowinski Sullivan worked closed with engineers to develop a solution that would ensure the safety of pedestrians within the connector. A code study and field survey were performed to evaluate the extent of the renovation required. Sowinski Sullivan designed a new lighting scheme and ceiling for the space. The space was low and had little to no natural light. The team provided signs and lighting to ensure visibility and wayfinding to passenger amenities. Sowinski Sullivan provided a sprinkler layout and emergency exit design to ensure life safety.
