Sowinski Sullivan was the architect on a team for improvements to the main high speed rail (HSR) building at the Washington Terminal Yard. A new single-track HSR facility designed to integrate into the existing HSR shop. This was done in a way that will minimize the impact of construction on the ongoing operations in the adjacent areas. Sowinski Sullivan designed the roof of the expansion to be lower than the roof of the existing HSR shop to eliminate the need to upgrade the existing facility to support the increased snow load. This design also reduces the outage time of track #12, which is critical for the existing wheel-truing operations. Sowinski Sullivan evaluated the existing welfare spaces in the existing facility, incorporated new Amtrak office standards and accommodated the planned HSR fleet growth. Sowinski Sullivan worked with the affected Amtrak departments, programming the welfare and support spaces required for the expanded HSR fleet while utilizing the existing support spaces to the extent possible. The facility expansion included additional storage buildings located in the yard.
