Sowinski Sullivan was the architect for the renovations at Henderson Substation. The existing Henderson substation is located at the far west end of the Hoboken Train yard near the intersection of Marin Blvd. and 18th Street below the FEMA-designated flood plain. The intent of the project was to replace the storm-damaged equipment and to elevate the new equipment above the FEMA designated flood plain to prevent damage from future flooding. The location for the medium voltage replacement substation equipment was relocated to the area that was previously occupied by the decommissioned terminal boiler building, just south of the existing substation. The relocated substation is situated to accommodate the track for the future Long Slip project. The façade of the new substation was constructed using a typical pre-cast form liner with a pattern that can be reused for the entire building facade. The base of the building consists of a cast-in-place foundation with a concrete finish. The upper portion of the façade is textured concrete and thin brick veneer split with a continuous horizontal concrete band and fixed aluminum louvers. The interior is comprised of six separate spaces: an electrical room, battery room, mechanical room, office, storage room, and toilet. A large overhead coiling door is provided to the west with direct access to the loading dock area to facilitate the movement of substation equipment. A removable panel for replacing substation equipment, provided on the north façade, allows direct access to the electrical room.
