Sowinski Sullivan (SSA) was the architect for the modification of the existing high-speed rail facility at the Amtrak Sunnyside Yard maintenance facility. This primary maintenance depot, which houses the entire NEC fleet, required substantial infrastructure improvements and upgrades to support anticipated future service operations. The project goal was to facilitate effective maintenance activities for both the incumbent Acela trainsets and the upcoming next-generation high-speed rail trainsets. SSA designed significant alterations to the platforms, service pits and associated railings, and stairs to accommodate the unique access points and maintenance areas of both trainsets. Also included in the scope of the project was a programming exercise with Amtrak and Alstom to identify the current and future storage and operational needs of the facility staff to support the required maintenance activities for both trainsets.
