Sowinski Sullivan (SSA) was the architect for the modification of the high-speed rail shop platform structures at the Amtrak Southampton Yard maintenance facility. These modifications were designed to improve the effectiveness of maintenance activities for both the incumbent Acela trainsets and the upcoming next-generation high-speed rail trainsets. SSA designed significant alterations to the platforms, service pits and associated railings, swing gate, and stairs to accommodate the unique access points and maintenance areas of both trainsets. An additional roof access platform and two vertical lift machines for storage were installed to help facilitate work on both trainsets, and elements such as a foreman’s office was relocated. Also included in the scope of the project was a programming exercise with Amtrak and Alstom to identify the current and future storage and operational needs of the facility staff to support the required maintenance activities for both trainsets.
