Sowinski Sullivan (SSA) was the architect for the modification of the high-speed rail shop platform structures at the Amtrak Ivy City Yard maintenance facility. The goal of the project was to improve maintenance operations for both the incumbent Acela trainsets and the upcoming next-generation high-speed rail trainsets.? SSA redesigned the platforms, service pits and associated railings, swing gates, and stairs to accommodate the unique access points and maintenance areas for both trainsets. An additional roof-access platform and two vertical lift machines for storage were installed to help facilitate work on both trainsets, and the existing locker room facilities were upgraded. To ensure a design solution that would meet the needs of the facility staff and the maintenance activities for both trainsets, SSA facilitated a programming exercise with Amtrak and Alstom to identify the current and future storage and operational needs.
